This probably sounds stupid, but I really want to learn how to sew and make clothes and stuff… but I freak out whenever I try and use a sewing machine. As soon I press the pedal, and it starts moving, I just panic.

i had some fears when i started sewing about 10 years ago. the way to over come this fear is confidence. just take scraps and run them through the machine, it doesn’t even need to be threaded. the machine will naturally pull the fabric in so there is no need to keep your hands very close to the needle.
if you do need to keep your hands close the foot/needle,whether to guide fabric or hold it in place, keep hands after about a 45 degree angle to the foot, give yourself about an inch room on either side. don’t be afraid to use plenty of pins and to stop the machine when removing them.
also, treat your sewing machine like anyother tool. keep it tuned, don’t push it to hard, and pay attention when you are using it and the machine will not hurt you. you are control of it. the machine only does what you make it do.
